Fix your eyes always on the race from which we have sprung…

How many saints we have in heaven who have worn this habit!”

It is St Teresa speaking to us here, urging us always to remember that
“It is we who are beginning now.” The Carmelite charism continues growing and developing in the lives of the many saints who have incarnated it over the years, and even to some degree in the lives of each member of the Carmelite family. Our foundress St Teresa of Jesus had the central and defining influence on this charism, while St John of the Cross who helped her found the Carmelite friars contributed to it greatly in his life and his writings. In modern times St Therese of the Child Jesus lived the same charism, giving it her own unique interpretation which speaks so powerfully to men and women of today. The lives of all the other Carmelite saints will be found on our prayer pages when their feast days come round in the course of the year.
